Google Analytic's Silently Organized our Stuff: Custom Reports

GA Just Organized Us:

Categories now are magically available on the Custom Reports "Overview"

Let's Organize:

For GA users like me who have a TON of custom reports, this is a life saver. It also means I'm now spending time cleaning up my mess.

I've been using this for a bit now, and I suggest the following strategy for Category "clean up" of your reports:

  • Create three main categories for key custom reports:
    • SEM -- to handle your Marketing reports (Paid or Unpaid)
    • Content -- content-specific custom reports. Very different from SEM
    • Usage -- this can house your audience, visitor, visitor technology, and site performance reports.
  • Create a "Bulk" category: put all of your reports in it that you don't use frequently, but need
  • Create a "Huh' category: dump your ?? custom reports in here. Delete at will later.

Moving Custom Reports to Categories:

  • This is a little bit like playing that ancient Lunar Lander video game.
  • Drag the report with the fuzzy two "dots" column on it's left
  • While you're dragging, if your reports list spans more than a page, you need to use your mouse wheel or your up/down arrow with your other hand to move while you drag.
  • Drop the report to the right of the Category name, and not on top of it.
  • Done.
  • It takes a few tries.
